Vickie Howell's New Yarn

Vickie Howell has a new line of yarn coming out in June 2011 called Sheep(ish). She is working with Caron International and you will be able to buy the yarn from them . The yarn will also be carried by JoAnn's and Herrschners.

Dish Towel Sets

Pattern for the towel toppers came from Mary Maxim's Apple Towel Toppers kit. This was suppose to be a Christmas present but was on backorder so I didn't receive it until after the holidays. Kit came with one towel and one skein of cotton yarn.

I then used the pattern to make 4 towels for my daughter Joan. As her kitchen is black and red , I used Lionbrand cotton in black for the toppers and was still able to make 2 dishclothes to go with the towels

I ran out of yarn with 3 more rows to go so I hope my sister does not notice as I made this for her for Christmas. There were also areas of the pattern that were not clear or correct ,leaving me to rip it out 8 times before I got it right with a little fudging. The yarn , Starlette, color soft taupe, had many knots as well.
It is a very pretty afghan when finished though and works up quick. I will make this pattern again as I now know where the errors are but will use a different yarn.
The finished afghan came out looking great. I hope my sister loves it just the same.

So for my birthday back in July my youngest daughter gave me a gift card for JoAnn Fabrics. I bought 6 skeins of Caron One Pounders and this is what I made with them. I was thinking I would need all 6 for one afghan.
These will be for Christmas. One is a twin bed size and the other fits the top of a full size bed.

Good news

My colon polyp was benign. I do not go back to see the doctor until January 2011.
So much pressure is off for now.

Health Update

Due to the fact my alkaline phosphatase is still high I had a CT scan last week that showed only a polyp on my gallbladder. Doctor called and said that I needed an ultra sound of the galbladder. I had one a few weeks before so he is going to compare them. I may need it removed.

Yesterday I had my one year post cancer colonoscopy. They removed a polyp there and sent it for testing. Will not know if its cancer for up to 2 weeks.

Keeping positive. I know I can beat this♥

As I always have a pair of socks going , I thought I would join the Ravelry group

52 Pair plunge IV. It began June 1, 2010 and ends May 31, 2011. So far I have one pair done and 2 other pair started. Will post photos as I go.

I am a little behind as I have had my 2 year - old nephew all this week . My sister had surgery for thyroid cancer. This has been a crazy year for it in our family. I have colon cancer, my mom breast and now my sister.

I see the doctor this coming Monday. Hoping for a clean bill of health.

Cancer update

Went to see the doctor yesterday. I was feeling great for a change and thinking so positive until he told me my blood tests were not good. Seems that there is still cancer somewhere. He said the level suggest liver or bone. He said he couldn't see anything yet on the last CT scan I had but it is there. The cyst on my liver may be doing something. As I cannot have another scan for a few months, I go back for more blood work and see him again in June. We will then plan the next scan and set up another colonoscopy.Updates to come....
One day at a time.....
Off to finish knitting my pink socks.

Ravelry's Portland Maine Knitters did a Knit for Yourself KAL hosted by me.

I deceided to knit myself a pair of socks. I used Knit Picks yarn in Farbe from my stash.

I used the 2 on 2 circular needle method using size 2 needles.

I started on January 1, 2010 and finished on January 19, 2010.

I used a pattern I have had for years as a handout from my local yarn store "Central Yarn"

I love this pattern as it is a basic sock pattern and when done fits very well.

This is the first pair so socks for this year. Off to knit more ;^)

I made mini socks in all the house colors so I would be ready when I knew my swap partners house color.

My partner was a Gryffindor .

I also sent a two sided owl ornament , mini sweater in her house colors and a snowman ornament. A Christmas tree to put it all under ;^)

I will knit up another sock to replace the one I sent out so I will be ready for the next swap.

I am waiting to receive mine and will post when I do.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving and will be a busy day so I thought I would wish all a happy one. What am I thankful for. My wonderful family,friends and that my health is doing good for now.

Now comes the countdown for Christmas knitting. I have 2 pair of socks going and an adult sweater 3/4 of the way done. I also have a baby shower this weekend and need to knit a sweater set for that. Thank god for the 5 hour baby sweater pattern!!

I received their offer for only $12.00 , which I agreed to pay. It had a send no money now. When my bill came it was for $24.00 for two years. I paid this . They stated that when payment was received that I would get a Cocoa Lovers Collection and a FREE $100.00 grocery coupon . I did not receive these. I checked out their web site and found out that you may or may not be picked to try a craft product and that if you are picked that you need to wait 6 to 9 months then cannot be picked again for 1 year.

Last week I received a book to review and buy if I wanted to keep it. It also stated that if I review 4 more books and buy them, then I would be picked to get a free craft product. They try to get you to buy these books that are not all that good. You can get the same info on the web for free. I am not into book clubs.

I do not mind reviewing products but I do not want to buy them.

Today I received a bill for another $24.00 for dues...........DUES FOR WHAT.........I already paid this . I didn't realize that it was monthly as it was not stated anywhere.

If I pay this I will receive my cocoa lovers collection and my grocery coupon.Also a welcome kit that I was suppose to receive before.

The free gift I did receive was a 4 1/2 by 6 inch gift bag.

There is a whole web search on how this is a SCAM.

I called and was told that they would change my membership to the magazine only.

By the way , this club also has a lifetime membership that they bill you for and do not let you know.

I made my husband Jim socks to keep his feet warm this winter. I try to make him a few pairs each winter.

I used Sensations Sock Yarn in the colorway Bamboo & Ewe. I bought this yarn at Joann Fabrics in Portland. This yarn is great for men's socks as it is a bigger skein. My only problem with this yarn is the color, its not mt favorite.

Health update

I went to the doctor's on October 4th to get the results from my second scan. The first scan found some abnormalities in my pancreas but we were dealing with the cancer first, thats how I ended up with a second scan.
The findings were; scars on my pancreas; a polyp on my gallbladder and a cyst on my liver that may or may not be anything. The doctor said he will be watching me. I have blood tests before he sees me again. I go back in March.
Only time will tell. Until then knit on.

Grey one in Noro. I hate this yarn as its so stiff and feels like nails when you rub it. Will soften it up with some fabric softener before sending. You would think for the $10.00 I paid for it ,it would be of better quality.

The purple one is made from Debbie Mumm. This made a really thick hat. It will keep someone very warm.

Both hats are for adults.

Next... off to knit some more on my husband's brown socks and start Christmas knitting. I need to make my grandkids hat and mittens/gloves. :^)

Cancer Update

No chemo for now. They are sending me for a CT scan on the 15th of my pancreas for abnormalities found on the scan they did when they found the colon cancer. No need to worry as the doctor said he did not see cancer there,its just to follow up on what they found.I am still infected so he opened the wound some more to drain. He said it was looking good. I go back to see him in a month,then blood work in 6 months. Colonscopy in one year.

New Knits

Over the last few weeks I have been doing alot of small knitted items . I made a crochet baby afghan and sweater to match. I have no picture as the person they were for took them before I could get a picture. I have made a few dishcloths, finished a pair of socks I started a few months ago (as car knitting ) and a sweater for my grandson Jack. I am now working on a sweater for my nephew Jafar with the left over yarn from Jack's sweater. All came from my stash.

I still need to finish my Trout Stream Sock and sew the Lenox Afghan together. (I might crochet it instead.)

Next will start The 8-Color afghan from Lionbrand and cast on another pair of socks.

The doctor called today to let me know that it was stage III colon cancer and that I DID NOT have it in my lymph nodes. :^)
I do have to see an oncologist. We will set the appointment when I see my surgeon in September.
I feel better each day but get tired quickly. The doctor said this is normal and will be for awhile.

Home from Hospital

I came home from the hospital on Thursday and am only now feeling well enough to post.
The surgery went well , 12 inches of bowel removed. I have 3 incisions as it was done through the scope. My 4 inch belly button incision became infected. Outside of being tired , I feel good.
Tomorrow I get the pathology report to see if it is in my lymph nodes.
Started a crochet baby blanket but not really feeling like doing anything but resting.

Day before surgery

This is the day before surgery. No food , clear liquids, including the prep drink,yuck.
I feel great one minute then nervous the next.
I have all the panels to the Lenox Afghan finished. Will spend the day sewing it together. Then I need to start sock 2 of the pattern I test knitted. Cannot show as the pattern is not public as yet.
Will take some dishcloth yarn with me to the hospital, maybe socks but will have to be a simple pattern, not sure how with it I will be.

Pre-ops

Last day of work today so I can get the house in order before surgery.

Saw the surgeon today. I have Stage III colon cancer with no other organs involved, which is a good thing. He will remove 12 inches of colon , then 6 months of chemo. Surgery will be in the next week or two. All I can do is take it one day at a time.

I cannot stress the fact that everyone should get a colonoscopy.

Ok, this has been a bad week.
I went this past Monday, for a routine ( or so I though) colonoscopy because I turn 51 this year .
I came home from work yesterday to find both the Gastro doctor and my family doctor had called wanting me to get in touch as soon as possible. I called my family doctor first. He gave me the news.
I have colon cancer.
I have to go have a scan to see if its anywhere else before surgery to have it removed.
The doctor thinks its in its early stages. Hope, hope !!
First I cried , then I thought its there and all I can do is take it a day at a time.
Everyone should have a colonoscopy at 45. If you need one please follow through.

The Lenox Square Throw

It has rained most of the month of June . It has been a cool ,damp month . I thought what better to knit in this weather but a blanket. I set my search over at Lionbrand and came up with the Lenox Square Throw.

This is a great pattern for 2 reasons.

1. It is done in strips , making it great if it ever gets warmer.

2. Uses size 13 needles for a quick knit.

I am using Vanna's Choice, 2 strands held together, in the Linen colorway.

This will be a Christmas gift for my daughter Nicole. It will look great on her red sofa.

I started this morning and have 2 cables done so far. Hope to finish this strip tonight.

Swap Items received

This is the swap package I received frommy buddy Janet over at Knit and Chat. I love the dishclothes. I had wanted to knit myself a set and now I do not need to as she was nice enough to do them for me.

This is my package I received from Xen over at the Reducio Sock Swap . I love the whole package. The tiny sock has a set of stitch markers tied to them. I think the little witch hat is too cute. I need to make some for a friend of mine that is a relative of one of the Salem witches .

The whole package is wonderful,right down to her candy wrappers.

Stash Reduction CBE

I am doing a stash reduction CBE over at Knit And Chat. As I love doing socks that is my reduction . I thought I could also use them as Christmas present.

I finished the first pair . Austermann Step . I found that this skein has lots of knots in it, the kind that happens from the factory. These will be for my sister. I thought she could wear them with jeans.

Pair number 2 is Knit Picks Essential Lily Pad Multi. I love this yarn,it fits my price range and is so soft. I am almost ready to start the heel. These may be for my oldest daughter.

My grandson Jack received his first stitches yesterday. He fell into the coffee table. His mother did the same thing when she was his age only she got the outer edge of her eye.

My sister's baby was born this past Thursday , two months early by C-Section.

He weights 3 pounds , 7 ounces and is 17 1/2 inches long. It's hard to see him as they have a nasal canula up his nose to dry up his lungs. I will post more pictures as he grows.

All is well, he is very healthy and will be home in the next 6 weeks.

A few weeks ago my grandson's band played at the Bath Skate Park. They did really well.

Their band has more gigs coming up and they have their own myspace for the band so their fans can keep tabs on whats going on. Check out their music , they wrote their own songs, no covers.

I have been wanting to knit this baby sweater for awhile.

Now that my sister is having her first baby , a boy , I get to make it for her.

I used Knit Picks Felici yarn in the color Clay. I cast on February 29 2008

After two false starts due to incorrect count, it knitted up quick as long as I was not watching TV and knitting.

You really need to pay attention to your count with this one.

I finished tonight March 8 , 2008 . Now to get some buttons.

DIY is now monitoring my posts and pulled some because I mentioned the president of Scripps name. This is the message I received from them.

Erin Sweater

I have been making progress on my Erin sweater.

The front , back, 1 sleeve and neck are done. Working on sleeve 2.

This sweater needs to be done for Valentine's Day as it is my project for the CBE on the Knit & Chat board.

I am also knitting heart dishclothes for the DIY KAL. I have 1 done and another 3/4 done.

This is the pattern I used for the one pictured below. Its a little hard to see but if you stare at it , you can see the hearts.

I have made it my mission to save this show. Not only is it the best knitting show but Vickie really rocks as its hostess.
I have been sending Scripps / DIY an e-mail every few days. I figure that by this time they know my e-mail by heart now.

Ninja Turtle Sweater

Sock Knitting

I have started two more pair of socks . One in Moda Dea Sassy Stripes , color Lucky and one in Lionbrand Magic Stripes , color Sea Blue. There is just something about knitting socks that I like and I think they wear much better than store bought socks. A very portable project. This is my van knitting, which means I knit them only in the van while waiting for the boys , at lights , ect.

Diy has moved our favorite knitting show to 5:00 A.M. here . I hear on the knitting boards that some are getting it at 2:00 A.M.
Does DIY think we do not sleep ???

This is a really cool pattern. I started it in red using size 6 needles. I think for the next one , I will go up to a size 8 or 9. I think it needs to be done on larger needles to make the hearts bigger.

I will also add a boarder as well.

Boot Socks

Here is my boot socks from a pattern I revised from DIY. These were my last project for 2007. This is a great pattern to use worstered weight yarn. I have posted other socks from this pattern before. I made the leg portion longer. Mine are 9 inches long.

I am now working on a ninja turtle sweater for my nephew and I still need to finish my Erin sweater .

Harry Potter Sweater

So my nephew wanted a Harry sweater . This pattern comes from the book "Charmed Knits " by Alison Hansel. The yarn is Lionbrand's Vanna's Choice.

I am not sure how this yarn will hold up as it is the first time I have used it. It's a thicker worstered weight than I like for a sweater. I like woolease much better. Holds up great for kid knits. I hope to get it finished before halloween.

Round Blanket

I made this blanket out of Lionbrand Homespun.
This is not my favorite yarn to crochet with, but it is so soft. My needle kept getting caught in the fibers. The picture is alittle dark. The yarn was leftover from sweaters I have knitted . The sweaters are so warm ,but the yarn tends to pill a bit.

It has been so hot that I have put my sweater down for now to work on boot socks.

I made a pair for me out of cranberry woolease.

I also made a pair out of Paton's Classic Wool in pumpkin for my grandson. He needed them for an Outward Bound trip. He could not bring anything cotton so he got wool socks.

I am now working on a fun fur scarf, for some mindless knitting. I still have a bunch of this in my stash I need to use up. I now hear these are no longer in style. I'll pass them out as gifts for Christmas. :^)

Tony's Skate hat

My grandson wanted a visor hat like the skateboarders wear. I looked around and showed him different visor hat patterns, all of which he did not like , so I had to come up with my own pattern. I changed a basic hat pattern and added a foam visor that I cut out myself.

Note to self, when using black yarn, use black foam.

You can see the foam threw the yarn. Other than that ,I think it came out very well.

I have started to write out directions for this pattern. I hope to get it done soon.

Now my other grandson wants one and my husband wanted to know where his has was.

Holiday knitting is where their hat is.LOL

UFO KAL Continued

Because it has been sooo hot, the progress on my sweater has been slow. I am now working on the front. This is a great sweater to knit, I just hate chart knitting. It looks so pretty though.

I have done a pair of socks for my mother's birthday. It was on September 5th. I also crocheted some pot scrubbers that I will use for teacher gifts during the holidays. They will also make great gifts for the family with matching dishcloths.

UFO KAL

Over at DIY we are doing a UFO KAL. I am working on a sweater I started last year.

The sweater is called Erin, from the book " Hot Knits".

I love the pattern and colors. I do most of my sweaters from the top down as I hate sewing them up . This sweater needs to be sewn so I had tossed it aside for those top down ones, also with the heat I have done very little sweater knitting. There is only one more week of the KAL and I need to get moving. I have the back finished and the front started . I hope to be done by next week

Fall Exchange

I joined in the Fall Exchange over at Knit & Chat.

Items had to be there by September.

My buddy was Julie, better known as Jules.

I sent her the tam and mittens I did for the DIY KAL.

I also sent her a moebius I did using the Knitty Gritty pattern .

This was a very easy pattern and works up quick.

I also sent a pot scrubber ( she thought was a coaster ) , some stitch markers , a magazine , some yarn and candy.

I was glad she liked them. The colors look lovely on her.
